The writing is quality and the plot was interesting enough to hold my interest all the way through. But I didn’t love the characterization. Roger is too similar to William Marshal, the hero of Chadwick’s other book The Greatest Knight - and Ida is too similar to Isabella de Clare, the female protagonist of The Greatest Knight (both of whom also feature in this book as side characters). And all four of them in general are almost too honorable and perfect, it seems so rare when they actually have a human flaw. It makes me wonder if the author is capable of writing a different kind of main character, one which is a little more human. But I think what makes up for this somewhat is the fact that there are plenty of other characters and events to keep me interested.
