I read a lot of fantasy and science fiction. I understand the tropes. I know writers who say they try to avoid them, and then pretty much use them. And I've read some who just regurgitate the tropes. I was expecting that later when I was handed Orullian's book. I was wrong. Oh, yeah, there are some archtypes here. Show me a book that doesn't have them. The thing that hooked me as I continued to read was that these characters felt real. They're asked to do some extraordinary things, but they're not super-mages, or the great fighters, or the smartest kids in class. Do they have some latent potential? Sure. But they struggle with it, and Orullian puts them through the paces. My hell, these characters really go through some stuff. But here's the thing: They never lose their humanity. Their choices are honest. And as the book goes along, and everything is wratcheting up--and there's real grit in here (not just blood and fights, but damn hard choices)--the book moves effortlessly into new terrain. I'm still not sure how Orullian did it. His style is smooth and lyrical. And he seems to find the right voice for his characters so that I feel like I know them. This one is a definite read. Highly recommended. Oh, and by the way, I read that Orullian wrote this over 10 years ago. I can only imagine what book two will be like, if he's writing that now.

I love this book. If you like the Anita Blake series then this is the series bot you... Sarah is a tough character but you can't help but fall for her. The man she thinks she loves, leaves her and she is left working for the local master vamp. This book has action, adventure, romance and a kick butt werewolf that leaves you wanting more, more, more!!!
