Government has always been an odd concept. By definition, a government is the political direction and control exercised over the actions of the members, citizens, or inhabitants of communities, societies, and states; direction of the affairs of a state, community, etc.; political administration. People have always questioned what a government should be. Should it be run by a single leader, or a group? Should it favor what the people want, or what it thinks we must have? Should it view privacy of protection, or vice versa? What should it be? All throughout history, people have tried so hard to perfect government. However, no one seems to have ever accomplished that, probably because they were always trying to improve government for the people. One man, however, has perfected a possible government for us. That man is George Orwell. George Orwell is the author of the infamous book 1984. 1984 is a frightening tale of government gone bad. It is the story of a dystopia that has created complete control over its people. However, for such a horrifying government it is, it is the most perfect government ever thought of, because it has perfected one thing; absolute control. In 1984, the world is divided into 3 enormous countries; Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia. Apparently, before the end of the 2nd World War, the United States pulled out of Europe before we did in actual recorded history, and the Soviet Union was able to take control of the war-torn continental Europe, creating one huge nation, called Eurasia. As a response, the United States and Great Britain took control of both North and South America, South Africa, and Australia, creating Oceania. China and Japan than took all of China, Southeast Asia, and north India and Iran, forming Eastasia. Eastasia is the smallest of the three; however the book states that its large, industrious population makes up for the size disadvantage. Oceania calls the formation of itself, in 1955, the “Revolution”, however this is just a ploy created by the Government of Oceania, the “Party”, in order to brainwash the public into believing that their country actually stands for something. These three nations are in a perpetual war with each other, and have been since they were created. One nation constantly allies itself with a second nation, and they both fight against the third nation. However, it switches up every so often. In the book, Oceania is, at first, allies with Eastasia, and fighting with Eurasia. The government coins the phrase “We’ve always been at war with Eurasia”, and the public accepts it as fact. However, midway through the book, a public orator is speaking on the war, and in mid-sentence changes the word “Eurasia” to “Eastasia”. When he said this, there were posters of Eurasians on the walls and pillars. The Public, abnormally blind to the change, becomes outraged because the posters of Eurasian “enemies” are wrong, and throw a riot and tear down the posters. This then changed the phrase to “We’ve always been at war Eastasia”. The three nations make war with each other in order to use up resources, raise public sympathy and nationalism, and kill their own people. All three nations know very well what they are doing, and do it purposely to control their people. No Nation actually wins the war; they simply just keep switching the enemy and killing off people in the unclaimed territories. No nation is better than the other, so humans literally have no way of escaping this horrible world. Each nation is just as ruthless as the other two. Oceania is the nation the book mainly focuses on, because it is where the protagonist, Winston Smith, lives. Winston lives in “Airstrip One”, the former Great Britain, in the capital of Airstrip One, London. London, Airstrip one, and all of Oceania, and the other two nations, are poor, war-torn places. The cities are crumbling, people live in hobbles, the economy is in disgrace, and everyone is completely oblivious to these facts. The three social classes, The Upper, Middle, and Lower classes are The “Inner Party”, the “Outer Party”, and the Proletariats, or “Proles”, respectively. The center of the government, and the upper class, the “Inner Party”, controls everything, and hold almost all power, however are kept under strict surveillance and control by the government, or “Big Brother”, the leader of Oceania. It is uncertain whether Big Brother is a real person, was a real person, or is just a façade created by the government for the people to focus on. Of the three, the third is most logical. The government also keeps constant surveillance over the entire nation with the help of large telescreens that watch all the citizens, and keep them under control. The government also has the “Thought Police”, which arrest people for even being suspected of conspiracy, a relation to the Spanish Inquisition. The government is made up of four ministries. The Ministry of Peace, or “Minipax”, deals with the country’s perpetual war. The Ministry of Plenty, or “Miniplenty”, is responsible for rationing and controlling food and goods, along with all production of all domestic goods. The Ministry of Plenty declares false claims to have increased the standard of living every time by a considerable amount, when in fact the ministry counteracts its own claims. The Ministry of Truth, or “Minitrue”, which is the propaganda arm of Oceania's regime, controlling information: news, entertainment, education, and the fine arts. Winston Smith works for the Records Department (RecDep) of Minitrue, "rectifying" historical records and newspaper articles to make them conform to Big Brother's most recent pronouncements, thus making everything that the Party says 'true'. Then, finally, the Ministry of Love, or “Miniluv.” This agency is responsible for the identification, monitoring, arrest and torture of dissidents, real or imagined. Based on Winston's experience there at the hands of O'Brien, the basic procedure is to wear down the subject with a long series of beatings and electrical torture. Finally, when the subject is near broken, they are sent to "Room 101", where they are exposed to their worst fear, once and for all eradicating any remaining impulse of individuality or resistance, and replacing it with a sincere embrace of the Party. The Ministry of Love differs from the other ministry buildings in that it has no windows in it at all. The names of the ministries’ are an example of the books concept of “doublethink”, in which what the Ministry is, is the opposite of what it does. The Ministry of Peace deals with war, the Ministry of Plenty deals with scarcity, the Ministry of Truth deals with lies, and the Ministry of Love, deals with hate. The government treats its three classes differently. The Inner Party is given the most wealth (though it’s not much), however is put under the most severe control. The Outer Party is treated poorly, but is also kept under constant surveillance and control. Finally, the Proles, or lower class, live in the worst conditions, however, are kept under little to know surveillance, or control. In fact, Proles even jeer at the television screens which keep watch of them, and no consequences befall them. This is due to a theory mentioned in the book. It is believed that throughout history, there have always been the three social classes, Upper, Middle, and Lower. The Upper class and Middle class always are feuding with each other, constantly changing places. The Middle class constantly grows tired of the privileges kept by the Upper class, and recruits the Lower class to rise up against the Upper class with promises of Freedom, Equality, Liberty, et cetera. When the Middle class overthrows Upper class, they then take the place of the Upper class. A new Middle class is eventually formed, while the Lower class stays in the same place as before, denied the promises of the now Upper class. Then the cycle repeats. This cycle has continued forever throughout history. The Oceanian government has found a way to stop the cycle. They grant the Upper class certain privileges that are denied to the other two, in order to win them over, though still keep them under control, for safety reasons. They treat the Middle class as average citizens, but put them under the tightest control, in order to prevent them from uprising, or uniting the Lower class against the Upper class. Little is done with the Lower class, because their ignorance and compliance make them no threat. It seems to be true that Ignorance is Bliss. Another thing the government does is enforce total censorship. When Winston asks an old Prole if he can remember life before the revolution, he has no idea. Even Winston only has faint memories of what life was before. This is because the government, specifically the Ministry of Truth, erases and/or rewrites history. Newspapers, books, shows, movies, any form of record is either destroyed or altered, to either make the government appear to be working and effective, create the façade of a better life in the post-revolutionary world, make the other two nations seem like eternal enemies, fabricate enemies of the state, like Goldstein, a character in the book who is like a counter-revolutionary/traitor, or force the people to forget the past so that it is as if the world has always been like this. The government has completely erased history, and was able to brainwash the people into thinking that they’re living in a utopia, though they blatantly live in the complete opposite of one. A different thing the government is doing while reading the book is changing the English language altogether. The government is creating a new language in the book in which it takes less thought to actually speak the language. Words like Amazing, Awesome, Incredible, Fantastic, Fabulous, Terrific, Outstanding, Fascinating, Marvelous, Prodigious, Shocking, Stunning, Surprising, Unbelievable, Wonderful, et cetera, et cetera, are replaced simply by the words good, plus good, and double plus good. The same applies to bad, however that may even not exist, because you could simply say that when something bad, it is “ungood”. If something is horrible, it is “double plus ungood.” The language is simplified so that it requires the most minimal amount of thinking to express what one feels. Words like Liberty, Freedom, Equality, and Prosperity will no longer exist because there will be no way to express those feelings. This will create a more ignorant population, and make it easier to control them. The final and most interesting theme in the book is how the government represses the human sex instinct. In Oceania, it is illegal to have sex. The government forces antisexualism on its people by completely eliminating the orgasm. Though it may not seem serious, the orgasm and libido play a huge part in human beings and behavior. Libido is sexual energy, the desire to have sex. Libido is a strong amount of energy, probably the strongest human energy. It forces humans to do good things, and bad things. Over time, libido grows stronger and stronger, and the only way it can be released is through sex. The Party has discovered that by eliminating the orgasm and sex altogether, people will have to focus all that energy on something else. They can’t focus it on arts or culture, because there is none in this world. They can’t focus it on education, because the people are kept ignorant, and they can’t focus it on improving their lives because they are so repressed. So what does the government focus their energy on? Big Brother. The government focuses all that energy on the love for big brother, and the hatred for everything else. The public is so focused on Big Brother, their completely ignorant of the problems in their world. If people were to have sex, they would lose all that energy and no longer focus on love or hate; they become completely apathetic towards everything. Don’t be mistaken, they can still have children, but it requires no sex. The government probably performs Artificial Insemination; however it is not made certain in the book. The government must create children because they use children to conjure up more love for Big Brother, and more hate for everything else. Children are taught to love Big Brother more than their own parents. (This frightens me because I remember in Catholic school, the Nuns, Preists, and teachers told me that I was supposed to love God more than my own parents) They do this because children are more easily manipulated. All in all, this government has perfected totalitarianism. This is a government that gets more, not less, ruthless over time. The government is constantly working to increase control over humanity. In the book, it even tells how the world will remain like this forever. Though the story is about a man’s hope to rebel and overthrow the government, the government has so completely perfected control, that Winston ultimately fails to overthrow the government. Winston is forced to conform to the government, and does. There will never be a revolution. There will never be any change. The world will never get better, never improve, and never stop. Humanity will be under control until the entire world comes to a complete end, or humanity dies off. Stuck like this forever, this is the world of 1984. Don’t take this lightheartedly. Though 1984 has come and gone, don’t believe this can’t happen. This book is a warning. Humanity has to defend its ideals; it has to take care of itself. We can’t be ignorant to the signs, we must be constantly aware. A government can get out of control, people can be manipulated, the world can change overnight. We must always make sure, for the survival of humanity, to never allow this to happen. For if we do allow this to happen, there will be NO TURNING BACK.
