4.5 stars "XOXO Hayden" is the story of a young man discovering himself thanks to a special, yet often difficult, relationship. Both moving and engaging, the story is completely unexpected in the best possible way. On the surface it appears to be the tale of a young man who meets and falls in love with his pop idol. Under the surface, it is much more and provides a journey that is poignant and realistic. Never does the story take the easy road, and instead the author has written a tale that grips the reader from the very beginning and doesn't let go. The story's main focus is on Steven Carlisle, a young man growing up in the 80's. At thirteen, he has a difficult home life with parents who are not very adept at veiling their disappointment in their younger son. Thanks to Steven's best friend, he wins a chance to meet English pop singer Hayden Whitfield. Steven knows all of Hayden's songs and can't believe he will finally get to meet the focus of his adoration. Though brief, the encounter strikes a cord with both Steven and Hayden and marks the beginning of a friendship that exists mostly through letters sent back and forth. Hayden sees something of himself in young Steven and wants to offer what support he can. Over the years as Steven matures, their relationship changes and becomes much more deep and personal, and helps Steven to accept who he is despite outside influences that attempt to force Steven to be something different. Though the story easily could have been just an exploration of the communication between the two main characters, there is an amazing wealth of depth and exploration, especially on the part of Steven. This story follows the young man through a critical part of his life, as he struggles to accept his sexuality in a time when the world was less accepting than it is today. The friendship with Hayden helps Steven at important times in his life, but there is a lot that happens in between their communications. Steven makes good and bad decisions on his path, and though Hayden is not always involved directly, at no time is he forgotten. In the same vein, Steven provides a tether to reality for Hayden when he needs it most. Desperate for validation and acceptance through his music, Hayden finds it difficult to fully express himself. Amid the whirlwind of celebrity and fame, Steven is a much needed distraction and sounding board for Hayden. As their relationship deepens, Hayden struggles with the ability to provide Steven what he deserves. Many of the scenes with Hayden are truly heartbreaking as he struggles to overcome his difficult childhood and deal with his addictions and lack of confidence. There are numerous similarities between Steven and Hayden, yet it's the differences that are the most striking. Both deal with serious addictions and difficult childhoods, but Steven is able to recover in a way Hayden is never quite able to achieve. Up to the end of the story, Steven struggles with his love and adoration for Hayden. Even when apart, Hayden is always a presence in Steven's life, one he must reconcile in order to find the real happiness he seeks. The writing is richly descriptive and flows beautifully. The main focus of the story is Steven, and as such his tale makes up the majority of the book and is presented in first person. At times the story switches to Hayden's point of view, but these are in third person. This provides an intriguing distinction between the two points of view, and even when we are reading Hayden's experiences it's obvious that we're learning things to help provide more perspective on what Steven will be faced with. The movement back and forth between Steven and Hayden is seamless and quite well done. This is most definitely a love story, a tale of a love that begins as adoration and deepens over time and has a profound affect on two lives. However readers should be aware that the ending is not a traditional romance ending. It is a happy ending of sorts, and one that I personally enjoyed much more than what it might otherwise have been, but it's not what many readers will expect. Overall this is a wonderfully engaging and moving story that should not be missed by readers looking for a book that breaks out of the typical mold.
